Executive Summary

LCR Connect and Adaptive Comms embarked on a progressive project for the 100th anniversary of the Southport Flower Show – introducing 5G connectivity to deliver an ultrafast guest experience. The objective was to amplify the visitor engagement by using fixed fibre connectivity, to underpin an enhanced 5G deployment for public Wi-Fi.

Stemming from a joint mission to improve the efficiency of electronic point-of-sale systems (EPOS), both Adaptive Comms and LCR Connect used a consultative approach to understand the guest and vendor experience at outdoor events. Through this, they found a solution that not only provided immediate public WiFi, but a long-term fixed backhaul network for future events at Victoria Park.

The Initial Challenge

The Southport Flower Show, one of the North West’s most popular outdoor events, faced connectivity challenges that had a significant impact on its operations and guest experience. The event had previously settled for standard FTTC connectivity, but this solution fell short in meeting the demands of an increasingly digital world. With a growing expectation for reliable Wi-Fi and advanced payment systems, the organisers needed a more robust network to handle ticketing, vendor transactions, and visitor engagement.

Furthermore, outdoor events like Southport Flower Show have traditionally relied on cash payments, with patchy or unreliable connectivity limiting the ability of vendors to fully adopt EPOS systems. The need for reliable, high-speed internet was clear—not just for current operations but to meet the ever-evolving expectations of guests who expect a fast, streamlined, convenient experience.

A Collaborative Approach

Adaptive Comms, who were already engaging with Southport Flower Show on telephony and website services, consulted with LCR Connect on an opportunity to enhance the event’s connectivity infrastructure – expanding their vendor and guest opportunity. Part of the Faster Britain network, LCR Connect’s leased line provided a dedicated option that was secure and resilient enough to accommodate the thousands in attendance. The project also aligned with the strategic planning for a site-wide Wi-Fi as a value-added service to guests and vendors alike.

The decision to integrate a 1Gbps leased line backhaul network through LCR Connect was pivotal. This high-grade connectivity was designed to not only meet the demands of the event but also provide year-round support for other events at Victoria Park. The leased line solution ensured fast, reliable, and uninterrupted internet service—a massive upgrade from the previous FTTC connection.

LCR Connect worked closely with Adaptive Comms to explore several connectivity options, selecting the most cost-effective option without compromising quality. Not only did the leased line provide the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the event but offers Adaptive Comms the foundation to deliver emerging 5G-powered technology that help to drive more interactive and engaging outdoor events. With Southport host to a significant tourism economy, the availability of cutting-edge fibre connectivity is essential for the region’s present events, but the future of attendee interaction.

The Results

The results of the project could also be defined by the following pillars:

Streamlined Ticketing and Visitor Management

Historically, guests experienced delays during entry due to unreliable internet, causing queues and frustration. The implementation of a robust network underpinned by 5G allowed for smoother, faster ticket processing and improved guest satisfaction. Visitors benefited from reduced wait times at entry points, significantly enhancing the overall experience.

  1. Vendor Support with EPOS Systems: The deployment of 5G-enabled Wi-Fi extended to vendors across the event site, allowing them to adopt EPOS systems and eliminate the need for time-consuming cash transactions.
  2. Reliability and Redundancy: To ensure seamless connectivity throughout the four-day event, additional SoGEA connections and cellular backups were integrated. These fail-safe measures provided peace of mind that a positive consumer experience could continue, in the event of a network outage.
  3. Enhanced Visitor Engagement: The reliable 5G network made it possible to offer Wi-Fi access to guests, improving their overall experience. Whether for social media sharing, live-streaming event activities, or simply staying connected, visitors had access to high-speed internet throughout the park.

The success of the Southport Flower Show’s 5G connectivity sets a benchmark for future outdoor events. With the ability to roll out similar connectivity options across other outdoor venues, the potential for monetisation through connectivity at parks, festivals, and campsites is immense.

As events grow larger and more complex, the need for reliable, giga-fast connectivity will only increase. The collaboration between Adaptive Comms and LCR Connect shows that a well-thought-out infrastructure can drive efficiency, enhance guest experiences, and unlock new business opportunities. By underpinning 5G connectivity with a strong backhaul network, the Southport Flower Show has demonstrated that outdoor events can adopt the same level of digital transformation seen in other sectors.

In the words of Adaptive Comms, the success of this project comes down to “Innovative adaptive communication”—a sentiment that reflects both the collaboration and the outcome of this forward-thinking deployment.
